How I became a voice-over actor in Portugal. What I did before, how naturally I fell into voice acting, and even the early signals from childhood that lead me to this wonderful path. Quite a grand title, do you agree? It wasn’t my idea…
The interview was part of a podcast by a Portuguese production company that highlights media professionals who are out of the limelight, behind the cameras, far from the spotlight. The task they perform demand it. But, just like cinema and theatre actors, they are essential to bringing creative projects to life.
There are many such professionals. Who has never watched the credits roll at the end of a film and asked himself “it took that many people to make this?!” Yes, it did.
Voice actors are one of those little hidden cogs that make the Media machine.
The podcast, The Fourth Wall, takes its name from the imaginary battier that separates theatre actors from the audience, only allowing the latter to observe without being seen, to contemplate the former’s art.
With four episodes so far, the podcast also had a hair stylist, a cameraman, and a producer. I was honored to be featured in the first episode.
We spoke about how it was to be a Portuguese voiceover actor, I revealed a few internal challenges of the job, and I even said stupid things as my odd habit of occasionally eating raw spaghetti… Sometimes. Only when I’m cooking. Surely not while I’m recording.
